Tai Lung Veterinary Laboratory

Description

The Site
The site, with an area of 2800 square meter, is bound by an access road leading from the Fan Kam Road, Tai Lung Experimental Farm and the Hong Kong Golf Club. On account of the predominately rural characteristic of the site, the design focuses mainly on the importance in maintaining the rural characteristics and confining the intensity of the development.

The Content
The project involves the construction of a two-storey complex to provide accomodation for the followings: -eight nos. laboratories for conducting a wide range of veterinary experiments -two nos. level-three bio-safety laboratories, with supporting facilities to handle animal carcasses and to perform post-mortem operations office accomodation and ancillary facilities for staff and technicians

The Concept
The rather technical and monotonous programme is tranlated into a dynamic interplay of geometric forms. BY interlocking and superimposing the simple geometric elements, different functional spaces progressively fell into places and zones for different uses were thus created. The juxtaposition of the building forms, developed in respect to the topographical contours of the slope, allowed the preservations of most of the mature trees and flat piece of land at the crest of the slope for the courtyard, The spatial arrangements of these simple shapes, the genuine use of materials, and the vibrant color of the landscape not only provide intense visual enjoyments, but also connect to the aesthetic of massing, proportion, form, scale, texture, shadow, and lighting to the surroundings. With this builing, the Architect extends his convincing contemporary interpretation of spatial and structural expression, but also demonstrates a capacity for material invention and celebration.

The Sustainability Design -Building forms are laid in accordance with the site profile and forms were are oriented to allow access of solar exposure according to the solar orientation and the prevailing wind. -Building footprint is kept minimal and only the necessary area is used so that the oroginal profile of the slope could be maintained without much disturbance. -Building blocks are positioned to avoid felling existing mature trees. -Roof-gardens and landscaped terraces are provided to compensate the trees fell.
