Description
With the rationalization of the public hospital services in the central part of Hong Kong Island, there were pressing needs to provide an ambulatory care centre which integrates various services to better serve the community and for efficient management. Out of environmental protection considerations and to achieve early launching of the new services, it was decided to make use of the structure of the 36 years old Tang Shiu Kin Hospital to house the required provisions through a comprehensive remodelling exercise. Every effort was made to maintain the integrity of the structure to reduce demolition waste while maximising the interior space for the required accommodations and the latest medical equipment. New services in this neighbourhood healthcare facility is reflected in the contemporary facade which not only synthesizes the various stages of additions to the building in the past but also gives this building a new life.
The project is remodelling of the existing hospital into an ambulatory care centre. The existing building structure comprises 2 blocks with a total of 10 storeys. The works involve demolition of an existing multi-floor vehicular ramp, all external architectural/structural features and all internal partitions. The building is provided with physiotherapy facilities, occupational therapy facilities, geriatrics day centre and clinics, psychiatric day hospital, dementia day centre, specialist and integrated out-patient clinics, rehabilitation facilities and other ancillary facilities.
