Ngong Ping Piazza

Description

With the breath-taking natural scenery and the strong Buddhist character and religious ambience, Ngong Ping becomes one of the popular tourism destinations in Hong Kong. To facilitate visitors to explore Ngong Ping and bolster its attractiveness to tourism, a 1.5 hectare Ngong Ping Piazza is constructed and acted as an important node to the various famous tourist attractions in the area, including Po Lin Monastery (寶蓮禪寺), the Giant Buddha (天壇大佛), Ngong Ping 360 cable car (昂坪360纜車), Ngong Ping Village (昂坪市集) and Wisdom Path (心經簡林). Ngong Ping Piazza has four main components, namely, new Pai Lau (新牌樓), Bodhi Path (菩提路), Di Tan (地壇) and a Chinese landscaped garden (中式亭園).

The entrance of the Piazza is featured by a New Pai Lau with 14.1m tall and 19.1m wide. New Pai Lau frame up the strong central axis of Bodhi Path and the Di Tan. It adheres to the proportion of timber Pai Lau of the Northern style, characterized by tranquility and solemnness. Both sides of the new Pai Lau feature the calligraphic works of Professor JAO Tsung-I (饒宗頤).

The Bodhi Path act as a central axis to the main focus to the Ngong Ping Piazza, Di Tan. To strengthen this central axis, the Path with stone statues of the 'Twelve Divine Generals' as well as 40 lotus-shaped stone, is flanked by 2 rows of semi-mature Ficus religiosa (菩提樹).

The stone statues were custom-made in the Mainland. Each stone statue measures 1.8m in height. Besides being the protectors of the Healing Buddha, the 'Twelve Divine Generals' are also guardians of the hours of the day, each responsible for a two hour section. In addition, they represent the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, as denoted by the different zodiac signs on their crowns. Two rows of grass turf following the alignment of the status are used to enhance the pureness of Buddha's ambience.

Di Tan is the main focus of the Ngong Ping Piazza. Four lotus ponds have been built around the Di Tan perimeter to facilities the staging of religious ceremonies. The spacious piazza mainly use grey granite paving to signify the pureness and dignified of the religious' ambience.

The Chinese landscape garden covers an area of 1980 m2, featuring a Chinese-style pavilion which measures 7.1 from front to rear and 5.4 height. The theme of the garden focuses on the spirit of wilderness and seasonal changes of distinctive plant materials, which create seasonal scenery to the tourists.
