The New Refuse Collection Point at Kai Tak

Description

Green Recovery Station is a new refuse collection point located in the Kai Tak District next to the newly developed residential area. It contains basic facilities to collect the city’s garbage, sort and recycle the useful materials. The project consists of material recovery store, water scrubber room, refuse collection vehicle parking & loading space, office, staff toilets and changing rooms. The form of the Green Recovery Station are determined by the precise positioning and organization of its machinery in height order, creating an efficient, sloping rooftop fit for the operations of material recovery. The transparent outlook, the use of natural materials, the integration of greenery and courtyards breaks the traditional image of RCP which is dark and unwelcoming. The cut-out aluminum fins embodied the award-winning graphics of the Kai Tak local creatives and became the iconic facade of the RCP.

Inspiration:
Embodying the concept of pleasurable sustainability while aligning with Hong Kong’s progressive vision of becoming a carbon neutral city, the Green Recovery Station aims to bring a fresh and new image of refuse collection point (RCP) to the local community. Conventional RCP building usually appears massive and gives off unpleasant scent. This project provides extensive greenery to harmonize with the surroundings in a humanistic gesture. The material recovery operations are contained behind the glass wall elevation facing the pedestrian walkway. The transparency gives a lightweight outlook and yet partially displays the recycling functions to the public. Green Recovery Station instills a green living culture and promotes waste reduction in the community.
Operation/ Flow/ Interaction:
Green Recovery Station consists of small building blocks integrated with greenery and outdoor courtyards. This facilitates natural ventilation and brings away any unpleasant scent effectively. The full height glass wall allows natural light to pour into the internal space and creates a pleasant working environment for the staff.
