Description
The Promenade, stretching from Ocean Terminal to the International Mail Centre, commands a spectacular view of Victoria Harbour and is a popular site, both for our local citizens and for tourists. To improve the attractiveness of the area and refresh the outlook of this central part of the Victoria Harbour, the Promenade needed a facelift and renovation was chosen as the way of tidying up the waterfront. In order to provide a unifying theme, [a mixture of greys] was chosen as the basic colour for the beautification plan. In addition, the Marine Deck at the Cultural Centre Open Space is clad in white aluminium panel in order to echo with the newly renovated buildings in the vicinity.
To capitalize on the harbour view, an alfresco cafeteria and restaurant were built on the site previously occupied by a Drainage Services Department’s sewage screening plant and pump houses. These structures were eyesore along the waterfront and have been removed to create more space for trees and benches.
Densely leafed Bauhinia variegata is planted along the edge of the promenade and this forms a green barrier in front of Salisbury Road, screening off traffic noise from the pedestrians. Like the Cherry blossoms in Japan that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the country, the Bauhinia variegata provides a beautiful display of pink blossom in spring.
