West Kowloon Law Courts Building

Description

The West Kowloon Law Courts Building is located at the West Kowloon Reclamation Area. The design of the Building exhibits the independent and dignified image of the court and symbolizes an independent, open and transparent judicial system of Hong Kong.

The Building comprises 32 courtrooms for West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, Small Claims Tribunal, Coroner's Court, Obscene Articles Tribunal, and the associated facilities such as library, file repository and offices etc. to meet the services requirements of different court users and enhance operational efficiency of the courts.

The design with two linked towers reduces the building mass for better ventilation. The design is derived from inside out and building layouts are so designed to meet end users’ operational needs and to the convenience of the public.  The symmetry and solemnity of the elevations symbolize and project the independence of the judicial system.

Glass curtain wall admits daylight, brings in greenery and allows people to see the activity inside the building, exhibiting a strong sense of transparency.  Ample headroom is provided within the courtrooms to bring in natural light and to enhance the sense of dignity of the courtrooms. Greenery is one of the major features of the building.  A landscape deck next to the Main Lobby and a roof garden at each tower are provided for the betterment of cityscape and for environmental and amenity benefits.
