Pound Lane Public Toilet and Bathhouse
Restoring a Tradition of Public Service
The Pound Lane Bathhouse was opened in 1904 as the first public bathhouse facility in Hong Kong. It was one of the government’s early initiatives to improve environmental hygiene in the community after an outbreak of bubonic plague in the late 19th century. In 1961, the Pound Lane Bathhouse was redeveloped in situ into the current Pound Lane Public Toilet and Bathhouse building has continued to serve the public until today.
Today’s refurbishment project by a team of surveyors, architects, engineers and hygiene experts incorporates the latest standard in public toilet amenities, while retaining its unique character as the first public bathhouse in Hong Kong. By celebrating the rich historical and cultural context of this remarkable public facility, the project is preserving Hong Kong’s legacy of providing quality hygiene facilities to residents and visitors to the city.
