Pak Shek Kok Public Toilet

A Smart Toilet for Better Hygiene and Energy Savings

The Pak Shek Kok Public Toilet is the first themed smart public toilet of its kind in Hong Kong. Offering a wide array of people- oriented smart features and innovative technology, the Pak Shek Kok Public Toilet is decorated with a unique bicycle theme that complements the neighbouring cycling track perfectly. With the bicycle-themed design and features, toilet users feel like as if they are in a miniature exhibition gallery about the local cycling culture as well as the development of new era public toilets through the applied technology.

This project used diversified design with application of new technologies to enhance public toilet hygiene and service to change the public’s impression of public toilets. The skylight, comprising Air Improvement Photovoltaic (AIPV) glass panels, will transform solar power into electricity to provide power supply for USB charging stations and smart mirrors, as well as to improve air quality by decomposition and removal of organic air pollutants. The dimming level of LED lights under the AIPV panels could be adjusted subject to operational needs and sunlight levels. Besides, smart toilet system will synchronise and control the operation of facilities, such as lighting and exhaust fans with real-time monitoring of environmental parameters via usage levels, photocells, air quality sensors and timers to achieve energy saving and carbon reduction. On the other hand, data collected by smart toilet system on daily toilet operation gives a tremendous assistance for reviewing service quality and enhancing management efficiency, so that the operation and maintenance of the facilities could be optimised. Apart from improving the quality of public toilet service for the visitors and nearby communities, this project also brings the development of public toilets and low-carbon transformation in Asian cities to a milestone.
